Oral Minoxidil for Alioecia: A Systematic Review

This systematic review from the 2020 International J of Dermatology is helpful.

There is no one protocol and the dosages range from 1.25 mg a day to 5 mg twice daily.  In women, often in conjunction with 25 mg of spironolactone.  There are no randomly controlled double blind studies.  It would make sense to start at 1.25 to 2.5 mg a day and give it three months before changing anything.  The only side-effect mentioned in the studies looked at for this afticle was some increase in facial hair,

Access to Our Medical Records

The Cures Act has a provision governing access to patient records. It mandates that patients must have access to their own health information. Thus, when you have a test done, you will get a link to the results whether you want to see them or not. It may be called your Portal, MyChart or something similar.

This topic was covered in a fine NY Times article on October 3, 2022.

Some of us may like this. Personally, I find it intrusive, annoying and potentially anxiety provoking.

Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Chronic Pain

Clinical data shows that the use of anti-inflammatory drugs was associated with increased risk of persistent pain, suggesting that anti-inflammatory treatments might have negative effects on pain duration. Anti-inflammatory drugs are NSAIDs and steroids.

Topical Fluorouracil for Actinic Cheilitis

Topical (5-fluorouracil [5-FU]) as a 5% solution was used to treat isolated actinic keratoses of the lips as well as diffuse actinic damage of the lower lip. Although producing considerable temporary discomfort, final results proved excellent, with recurrences in only two of 12 patients treated. Preliminary biopsy of suspicious infiltrated areas is mandatory, as is careful follow-up to ensure complete healing. Topical fluorouracil is an alternative to surgical excision of the vermilion border of the lip in those patients with severe diffuse actinic damage of the lips.
